When you go through customs Border Patrol officer checks your visa and writes your immigration status and the length of time you may remain in the U.S. on Form I-94. Your status in the U.S. is valid up to the expiration date stated on the Form I-94 so long as you do not violate your status.
To maintain your status, you must file change of status or extension of status application before your status expires.

– Apply for a green card on your own without a job offer,
– Find an employer who will file application for your green card,
– Apply for asylum or withholding of removal.
